Sussex PM Group Meeting: Matthieu Hughes on German Banking History
February 22, 2012
From 3-5pm, on 24th February 2012, in Bramber House, room BH-237 (campus map), Matthieu Hughes will present his draft paper ‘Made in Germany: information asymmetry, “political Marxism” and the construction of early Rhenish mixed banking.’ In this paper, Matthieu explores the theoretical separation of economics and politics in the financial historiography of Germany. With reference to historical illustration from the Rhineland in the German Vormärz period, the paper argues for a departure from interpretations based on ‘asymmetric information.’
Matthieu is a Sussex DPhil candidate in International Relations. His research focuses on the historical development of Germany’s ‘bank-based’ financial system, with an emphasis on the nineteenth century.
